Uncanny X-Force #4, March 2011, written by Rick Remender, penciled by Jerome Opena
Hey, Uncanny X-Force, where do you get off being enjoyable and well written? You got some nerve making me care about Fantomex, a character that used to feel like a snarky parody of mutant heroes. And really, how dare you make this Wolverine more Wolverine-y than the Wolverine in Wolverine. Jason Aaron has been writing this character longer than you, Uncanny X-Force, and you’re already outshining his work four issues in! And Psylocke and Archangel, that relationship was played out in 1997. I was fine leaving it buried in my comic bookcase where I could forget about the unused potential in one of the most interesting pairings in all of X-dom. Now you trot it back out again and make it more interesting than ever? And use recent developments in both characters lives that happened in other books to make it even more complex and compelling? What gives you the right, Uncanny X-Force?
As a follow up to the hyper-violent, murky, bummer of an ongoing that Kyle and Yost created with the impenetrable Crain, you fail in every way, Uncanny X-Force, by creating a gorgeously rendered action adventure with clear motivations, intriguing interactions and ideas that are unlike anything I’ve ever seen in an X-Men book that are still intrinsically X-Men.
UGH UNCANNY X-FORCE WHY DID YOU MAKE ME LOVE YOU SO MUCH?
My Score: 8.9
