What happens when you combine an industry veteran at the top of his game with a hot, up-and-coming young artist, and let them loose on Marvel’s mightiest mutants? You get a fan-favorite, multi-year X-Men run unequaled in style, pizzazz and wall-to-wall action! It’s Chris Claremont’s most ambitious story arc ever, featuring Jim Lee’s dynamic debut issues and major changes to the X-Men’s status quo! Jubilee debuts just as the X-Men disband, granted new lives by the Siege Perilous! The Reavers enact gruesome revenge on Wolverine and decimate Muir Island, while Psylocke is transformed into a ninja! The Shadow King makes his play for Storm, culminating in the action-packed introduction of Gambit! Wolverine’s hidden past with Captain America and the Black Widow is revealed! And this is just the first volume! Collecting UNCANNY X-MEN #244-269, X-MEN ANNUAL (1970) #13 and CLASSIC X-MEN #39.
704 PGS./Rated A…$125.00 ISBN: 978-0-7851-5822-6 Trim size: oversized

Hello something I need to save up for! YES.
This is exciting, but can I take a minute to be a super nerd about the cover?
This roster never existed, ever. This is a promo shot for a run on the book that could have happened, had X-Men #1 not been made.
I sent this in to Comic Urban Legends Revealed a couple years ago, but still haven’t gotten an answer. I don’t really know if this is the roster that would have happened instead of the “Muir Island Saga” into X-Men v2 #1, but there is tons of evidence to support this theory. Namely, this image which was used as a trading card and promo shot. Also the X-Men roster on the first to Marvel Universe series of trading cards from 1990 and 1991 featuret his roster.
And come on, this roster never existed. Storm never wore that costume. This looks like the Shi’ar-mission-team-uniform team from #275, just adding Rogue and Strong Guy (?) and Beast. And what a downturn Strong Guy’s career trajectory took. For a brief second he was going to be an X-MAN. Bummer for him he got shunted off to X-Factor (and one of the greatest X-Men comics of all time).
Seriously, what’s up with this? There wasn’t an iconic shot of an actual roster of X-Men drawn by Jim Lee that could have been used for this cover? I love it, don’t get me wrong, but this is pushing “don’t judge a book by its cover” a little too far.
Okay, but I did just realize, while this roster never happened, all of these characters do appear in the issues that this omnibus covers.
Except Strong Guy. Do not buy this omnibus looking for Strong Guy.
